M\u00e1s de los que el Maquis querr\u00eda y menos de los que el R\u00e9gimen busca. Por tanto, disponer de un buen sistema de combate que transmita los aspectos hist\u00f3ricos de este conflicto, es clave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Un reto complejo: &#8216;descender&#8217; de la escala estrat\u00e9gica a una virtualmente t\u00e1ctica<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Guerrilleros <\/strong>tiene una dificultad de dise\u00f1o que puede pasar desapercibida: el conflicto se trata de forma nacional, a escala de pa\u00eds, pero las batallas son, digamos, \u00abcelulares\u00bb. Es decir, la escala del juego es <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">estrat\u00e9gica<\/span>, pero para poder darle el sabor hist\u00f3rico adecuado al conflicto y sus enfrentamientos, tuve claro desde el primer momento que el combate (o sus efectos) deb\u00eda ser tratado a nivel pr\u00e1cticamente <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">t\u00e1ctico<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A priori esto puede parecer una incoherencia y, sin embargo, en el caso de <strong>Guerrilleros<\/strong>, es coherete y funciona muy bien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De forma general es l\u00f3gico pensar (yo lo pienso) que la escala estrat\u00e9gica necesita un combate acorde, donde grandes fuerzas m\u00e1s o menos parejas se enfrentan unas a otras y la forma de ataque, defensa y bajas, se adecue a tal escala. Pues bien, este concepto ni aplica ni funciona en <strong>Guerrilleros <\/strong>porque no se trata de un conflicto cl\u00e1sico entre dos fuerzas de magnitud similar, sino que es un conflicto tan <strong>asim\u00e9trico en fuerza y recursos<\/strong> como se pueda imaginar, hasta el punto en que el Maquis no tiene posibilidad alguna de \u00e9xito b\u00e9lico en el largo plazo (por eso la victoria militar no es una condici\u00f3n de victoria del Maquis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tras darle vueltas a c\u00f3mo unir esa brutal asimetr\u00eda R\u00e9gimen-Maquis con la idiosincrasia de las agrupaciones guerrilleras y del gobierno franquista, encontr\u00e9 una forma de <strong>reconciliar<\/strong> ambas escalas, estrat\u00e9gica y t\u00e1ctica, sin perder la personalizaci\u00f3n del combate, como obligar\u00eda el nivel estrat\u00e9gico, ni perderme en los detalles del nivel t\u00e1ctico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Un sistema divertido, \u00e1gil y coherente<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pienso que un sistema de combate est\u00e1 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">obligado<\/span> a mantener la inmersi\u00f3n de los jugadores en la batalla en curso. El resto de adjetivos del sistema (denso, f\u00e1cil, largo, lleno de DRMs&#8230;) ser\u00e1n luego a gusto de cada uno. Sin embargo, sospecho que casi todos compartimos lo frustrante que es cuando un sistema te pone piedras en el camino (incluso aduciendo historicidad), empobreciendo la inmersi\u00f3n y diversi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Por todo lo anterior, me centr\u00e9 en dise\u00f1ar un sistema divertido, \u00e1gil y coherente al tipo de conflicto, de f\u00e1cil memorizaci\u00f3n para evitar consultas a las reglas. Un sistema en el que se pudiera percibir que los protagonistas de los combates no son grandes entidades (todo un estado frente a un movimiento guerrillero residual) sino <strong>un pu\u00f1ado de personas frente a otras<\/strong> cuyos enfrentamientos y resultados tuvieran efectos a varios niveles: el narrativo, sobre las propias tropas, en el entorno civil y en el gobierno o movimiento guerrillero como entes abstractos &#8211; que est\u00e1n representados por los propios jugadores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Tipos de enfrentamiento<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entremos en harina. En <strong>Guerrilleros <\/strong>hay dos tipos de <strong>enfrentamiento<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CONFRONTACI\u00d3N<\/strong>&#8211; se da cuando las unidades de un bando se encuentran con las del rival en un mismo \u00e1rea. Ocasionalmente, un compromiso concreto tendr\u00e1 que ignorar una o m\u00e1s etapas, pero el procedimiento siempre ser\u00e1 el mismo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Las etapas de un combate son:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>D\u00cdA O NOCHE<\/strong> &#8211; momento del combate y posibles implicaciones (el atacante tira 1d6; en las Incursiones, el Maquis deciden).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>INICIATIVA <\/strong>&#8211; posibles ventajas para el atacante (tira 1d6).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>COMBATE <\/strong>&#8211; impactos, vencedores y da\u00f1os (cada bando tira varios d6, es la fase central del enfrentamiento).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>DA\u00d1O COLATERAL<\/strong> &#8211; posibles consecuencias (poco frecuentes y dependientes de la tirada anterior).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>RETIRADA<\/strong> &#8211; posible retirada de las unidades supervivientes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>En resumen (only in Spanish):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/slidesz\/AGV_vUf1gM8fDY3bwwVNcY7A9S2vNhVhMirc2keTGHitiHCdHPXVKhST7ojkpAXygpfJ0So4_jc235vIQlsB4Npff4vG-gHI8624WR0pl6trI1K3xXJQKRjqVIqIQ5w4THN7r2Cp-1f1=s2048?key=Ch_iKzJemhRORVf2Afmltg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Atacante y defensor<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El <strong>atacante<\/strong> ser\u00e1 el bando que origina un enfrentamiento de cualquier tipo debido a una maniobra (Mover, Desplegar). El rival, l\u00f3gicamente, ser\u00e1 el <strong>defensor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Esto se cumple siempre excepto cuando el Maquis inicia un combate en retirada, que se considerar\u00e1 el defensor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Agilidad y narrativa de los enfrentamientos<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Todo \u00e9sto est\u00e1 muy bien pero \u00bfes en realidad un sistema \u00ab<em><strong>divertido<\/strong>, <strong>\u00e1gil <\/strong>y <strong>coherente <\/strong>con el conflicto<\/em>\u00ab? \u00bfFomenta la <strong>narratividad<\/strong>? \u00bfEs <strong>inmersivo<\/strong>? Tal es el objetivo y los jugadores tendr\u00e1n la \u00faltima palabra, pero el procedimiento as\u00ed lo propone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>La fase de <strong>D\u00eda o Noche <\/strong>establece <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">CU\u00c1NDO<\/span><\/em> se da el combate, ofreciendo pros y contras aleatorios (en Confrontaciones) o voluntarios (en Incursiones).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>La fase de <strong>Iniciativa<\/strong> puede otorgar beneficios importantes al atacante (cobertura, vencer empates o relanzar dados) seg\u00fan el <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">TIPO DE TERRENO<\/span><\/em> en que se encuentre: \u00e1reas de poblaciones menores, pueblos o ciudades.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>La fase de <strong>Combate<\/strong> s\u00f3lo necesita una tirada de tantos dados seg\u00fan la <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">POTENCIA TOTAL<\/span><\/em> de las fuerzas participantes (n\u00famero de unidades, enlaces cercanos, armamento, fuerzas en la retaguardia o la defensa intr\u00ednseca de una ciudad con sus refuerzos); las dos tiradas permiten <strong>resolver de un golpe de vista<\/strong> el n\u00famero de <em><strong>impactos<\/strong><\/em>, el <em><strong>vencedor <\/strong><\/em>del combate y los <em><strong>da\u00f1os <\/strong><\/em>infligidos al enemigo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>La fase de <strong>Da\u00f1os Colaterales<\/strong> es un extra a la fase de combate que se da tras un combate con impactos no infligidos como da\u00f1os al enemigo sino como posibles da\u00f1os colaterales <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">A LA POBLACI\u00d3N CIVIL<\/span><\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Estos elementos, es decir, el momento, el terreno, la potencia desplegada, los da\u00f1os colaterales y la posible persecuci\u00f3n son los ingredientes que dan la capa <strong>narrativa<\/strong>, <strong>inmersiva <\/strong>e <strong>hist\u00f3rica <\/strong>a los enfrentamientos de <strong>Guerrilleros<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Duraci\u00f3n de un enfrentamiento<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Todo lo descrito anteriormente en las diferentes fases transcurre en poco tiempo. El proceso completo implica:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Un <strong>m\u00e1ximo de 2 tiradas de 1d6 <\/strong>&#8211; inmediatas y, en ocasiones, innecesarias.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Una <strong>tirada de combate <\/strong>simult\u00e1nea &#8211; se dirimen impactos, vencedor, da\u00f1os y posibles consecuencias.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Una <strong>posible consulta de da\u00f1os colaterales<\/strong> &#8211; en funci\u00f3n de la tirada anterior, se da en menos del 10% de los combates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Es decir, la <strong>duraci\u00f3n media de un enfrentamiento<\/strong> de cualquier tipo es de <strong>entre 1 y 2 minutos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Estos datos son respaldados por un par de cientos de enfrentamientos celebrados en diferentes partidas, mesas y por diferentes jugadores, casi todos de nula o poca experiencia con el juego. En ese par de minutos se incluyen decisiones, recuentos, tiradas y consultas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Por tanto, las varias decenas de enfrentamientos que se dan en una partida normal <strong>ni entorpecen la experiencia de juego <\/strong>ni fomentan el an\u00e1lisis-par\u00e1lisis (AP) una vez se coge familiaridad con cada fase &#8211; lo cual suele ocurrir al segundo o tercer enfrentamiento de la primera partida de un jugador novel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Pero&#8230; \u00a1ponme un ejemplo, hombre!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calma, calma. More than the Maquis would want and less than the Regime is looking for. Therefore, having a good combat system that transmits the historical aspects of this conflict is <strong>key<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>A complex challenge: \u2018descending\u2019 from the strategic scale to a virtually tactical one<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guerrilleros has a design difficulty that may go unnoticed: the conflict is dealt on a national, country scale, but the battles are, shall we say, \u201ccellular\u201d. That is to say, the scale of the game is strategic, but in order to give the right historical flavor to the conflict and its battles, it was clear to me from the first moment that the combat (or its effects) should be treated at an almost tactical level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A priori this may seem inconsistent. However, in the case of Guerrilleros, it is consistent and works out beautifully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, it is logical to think (I think so) that the strategic scale needs a corresponding combat, where large forces more or less evenly match each other and the form of attack, defense and casualties, is adapted to such a scale. Well, this concept neither applies nor works in Guerrilleros. It is not a classic conflict between two forces of similar magnitude, but a conflict as <strong>asymmetric <\/strong>in strength and resources as can be imagined &#8211; to the point that the Maquis has no option for a military victory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After thinking a great deal about how to blend together this brutal Regime-Maquis asymmetry with the idiosyncrasies of the guerrilla groups and the Francoist government, I found a way to reconcile the two scales, strategic and tactical, without losing the personalisation of the combat just as the strategic level would require, or getting lost in the details of the tactical level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>A fun, agile and coherent system.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think that a combat system must be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">forced<\/span> to keep the players <strong>immersed <\/strong>in the battle in progress. The rest of the adjectives for the system (dense, easy, long, full of DRMs\u2026) will be up to each player&#8217;s taste. However, I suspect that almost all of us share how frustrating it is when a combat system gets in your way (even on the grounds of historicity), impoverishing immersion and fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all of the above, I focused on designing a <strong>fun, agile and coherent<\/strong> system, easy to memorise to avoid frequent rule queries. A system in which it can be perceived that the protagonists of the combats are not large entities (a whole state versus a guerrilla movement) but <strong>a handful of people versus others<\/strong> whose clashes and results have effects on several levels: the narrative, on the troops themselves, on the civilian environment and on the government or guerrilla movement as abstract entities &#8211; which are represented by the players themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>Types of engagement<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s get down to business. In Guerrilleros there are <strong>two <\/strong>types of engagement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CONFRONTATION <\/strong>&#8211; occurs when units of one side meet those of the opposing side in the same area. Occasionally, a particular engagement will have to ignore one or more stages, but the procedure will always remain the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stages of an engagement are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>DAY OR NIGHT<\/strong> &#8211; time of combat and possible implications (attacker rolls 1d6; in Incursions, the Maquis decides).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>INITIATIVE <\/strong>&#8211; possible advantages for the attacker (roll 1d6).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>COMBAT <\/strong>&#8211; impacts, victors and damage (each side rolls several d6, this is the central phase of the engagement).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>COLLATERAL DAMAGE<\/strong> &#8211; possible consequences (infrequent and dependent on the previous roll).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>Attacker and Defender<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>attacker <\/strong>will be the side that originates an engagement of any kind due to a manoeuvre (Move, Deploy). The opponent, logically, will be the <strong>defender<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is always true except when the Maquis initiates a engagement after retreating, in which they will be considered the defender side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Agility and narrative of the engagements<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is all nice but, is it really a \u00ab<em>fun, agile and conflict-consistent<\/em>\u00bb system? Does it foster the <strong>narrative<\/strong>? Is it <strong>immersive<\/strong>? That&#8217;s the goal and the players will have the last word, but the procedure aims so:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Day or Night<\/strong> phase sets <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">WHEN<\/span> combat occurs, offering random (in Confrontations) or voluntary (in Incursions) pros and cons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Initiative<\/strong> phase can grant important benefits to the attacker (cover, winning in ties, or re-rolling dice) depending on the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">TYPE OF TERRAIN<\/span> of the fight: minor population areas, towns or cities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Combat <\/strong>phase requires only one die roll of so many dice according to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">TOTAL STRENGTH<\/span> of the participating forces (number of units, close links, armament, forces in the rear, or the intrinsic defence of a city with its reinforcements); the two die rolls allow to resolve at a glance the number of hits, the winner of the combat, and the damage inflicted on the enemy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Collateral Damage<\/strong> phase is an extra to the combat phase that occurs after a combat with hits not inflicted as damage to the enemy become possible collateral damage <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">TO THE CIVILIAN POPULATION<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These elements, i.e. the moment, the terrain, the power deployed, the collateral damage and the possible chase are the ingredients that give the <strong>narrative<\/strong>, <strong>immersion <\/strong>and <strong>history <\/strong>layers to Guerrilleros&#8217; combat system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Duration of an engagement<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything described above in the different phases takes place in a short period of time. The whole process involves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>maximum of<\/strong> <strong>2 rolls of 1d6<\/strong> &#8211; immediate and sometimes unnecessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>simultaneous combat roll<\/strong> &#8211; hits, victor, damage and possible consequences are determined.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>possible collateral damage consultation<\/strong> &#8211; depending on the previous roll, occurs in less than 10% of combats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, the <strong>average duration of an engagement<\/strong> of any kind is <strong>between 1 and 2 minutes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This data is not an estimation but factual data, backed up by a couple of hundred matches held at different games, tables and by different players, almost all with little or no experience with the game. Included in those couple of minutes are decisions, counts, rolls and consultations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the several dozen confrontations that occur in a normal game neither hinder the game experience nor encourage analysis-paralysis (AP) once familiarity with each phase is gained &#8211; which is often the case by the second or third engagement of a novice player&#8217;s first game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>But\u2026 give me an example, man!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Easy there, I know.
